Religion is the common belief of the existence of a higher power or higher powers. This age old tradition of including religious education with traditional education has recently garnered some negative attention. Persons in various sectors of society are clamoring for the removal of religious education in schools, citing religion’s negative effects on young people. This essay will argue for the idea that religion should be in schools.
Religion should be taught in school because it teaches good values to growing children. Children attend school to be taught how to behave in society. They learn the ins and outs of how to be a model citizen. Religion also teaches lessons on how to be a good citizen. Christianity for example teaches charity, that persons should give to the less fortunate. It also teaches forgiveness, to turn the other cheek when one party has harmed you. Finally, it teaches persons not to steal from others. One of the famous Ten Commandments of the Bible states that “Thou shall not steal.” Children will benefit greatly from learning these lessons early on because they are not exclusive to living a good Christian life. Secular society also values the ideas of giving to others, forgiving those that have wronged you, and not stealing. Children who attend religious classes in school can absorb these teachings and stay out of jail for one, and also become well behaved citizens.
In conclusion, religion should be included in school because children can benefit greatly from a religious education. They can learn lessons of generosity, forgiveness and to not envy others’ possessions, which can help them become model citizens.
