The acronym STEM stands for Sciences Technology Engineering and Mathematics. STEM subjects are the new medicine. They are the hot new field that many a person are rushing into, in hopes of monetary gain. There is a widespread thought that only STEM subjects should be taught in schools. This essay seeks to argue against this point, that STEM should not be the only subjects taught at schools.
STEM should not encompass the entirety of the academic curriculum. There are other subjects that exist other than these four areas. There are the Humanities like Foreign Languages and Literature. There are the Social Sciences like Sociology and Social Studies. There are the Arts like Dance and Music. Each subject has a place in schools. Financial gain should not be the sole factor for choosing a career path. Students should value learning other skills like how to communicate with foreigners or how to analyze social phenomena. Learning a variety of skills is rewarding, and can also be used to earn income. Even if other areas don’t see the same financial returns, persons can still have a decent standard of living learning non-STEM subjects. Therefore, STEM topics should not be the only ones covered in schools.
In conclusion, STEM subjects should not be the only subjects taught at school. There are other areas of study like the social sciences and the arts among others that are useful to learn and can lead to persons earning decent income.
