The word “medicine” describes tried and true methods to treat ailments. Anything else cannot be referred to by that name. Many persons believe that folk medicine is just as effective as modern medicine, and that just isn’t true. This essay shall argue against this thought, and put forth the idea that folk medicine is not as effective as modern medicine.
Folk remedies aren’t on par with modern medicine because folk medicine isn’t reliable. Modern medicine uses peer review to ensure that results can be reproduced reliably. There are recipes that are so specific, measured to the milligram to ensure their efficacy. These recipes also don’t use too much of the key ingredients, so as to not injure persons with overdoing amounts. Folk remedies cannot boast having that advantage. Folk remedies are measured “by the palmful.” Whose palm, pray tell? No one really knows. Imagine telling someone to boil a leaf and drink the remaining water, and someone using too many leaves in the brew and getting ill. This is where modern medicine beats out folk medicine because not only are the key ingredients measured out, they are made in sanitary facilities by medical professionals. Persons are unlikely to overdo a dose and experience consequences when consuming modern medicine, as opposed to folk medicine where this outcome is very possible.
In conclusion, folk medicine isn’t as effective as modern medicine. Folk medicine lacks measurements and safety. Modern medicine does have these benefits and is better than folk medicine.
