Society is not a hivemind. There isn’t one path for everyone to follow. While there are popular career choices like being a doctor, a lawyer or an engineer, there are many jobs to be held in society. A person’s career choice should be theirs, and not the government’s choice. This essay shall defend the idea that students should choose their modes of study even if a government sponsors their education.
Students should be free to chart their own path. A career is for life. It is for a lifetime. One typically works in their field until retirement, and sometimes after retiring. Therefore, it stands to reason that a person choosing a career should do just that, choose their career. They should pick something that makes them happy, that they would be content doing for the rest of their life. The government cannot decide for a person what they should do careerwise. The government operates on efficiency, and what is best for the country. But the overall good can be to the detriment of the individual. Imagine a person being stuck in a career they hate because of bureaucracy. That is a recipe for disaster, and wasted investment in education as persons may not fill posts in society that they are technically qualified for, but not willing to perform. Government has no place in deciding what career people should eventually take up, even if they pay for tuition.
In summary, government should not be involved in deciding which areas of study persons are allowed to take up. Government should sponsor all areas and allow persons to develop into the professionals they would like to be.
