Unemployment is the term given to a state where persons are without a way to pay to support themselves. Persons in the Caribbean are negatively affected by unemployment. There are many causes and effects of unemployment. This essay shall examine one cause and one effect of unemployment in the Caribbean.

One cause of unemployment is economic downturns. The economy operates in cycles. One day it is up. The next day it is down. This means that when the economy is in its downward part of its cycle, businesses close. When businesses close their doors, persons are laid off. They lose their means of earning income and end up unemployed. When large swaths of persons are laid off, there are many unfortunate effects that follow.

One effect of unemployment is brain drain. When persons are faced with dwindling employment opportunities, they move to places with more chances to get jobs. Brain drain occurs when highly qualified persons migrate to find better opportunities. You can see your teachers leaving Caribbean shores in favor of other countries. You can see your doctors, lawyers and engineers leaving en masse as another example of brain drain. This negatively affects the Caribbean because there is a dearth of skilled persons to keep the country running well. A country without teachers cannot educate the upcoming population. A country without doctors cannot heal the sick. A country can quickly fall into chaos and disorder, and the local economy can weaken. Unemployment does negatively affect Caribbean countries.

One way to combat unemployment is to encourage foreign companies to set up shop on Caribbean islands. American franchises like Starbucks and KFC can open many branches in the Caribbean and create jobs for locals. Persons can man these posts and earn incomes to feed themselves. That way, these countries can stave off unemployment one foreign company at a time.

Unemployment is a real issue in the Caribbean. One cause of unemployment is economic downturns. You can see one effect of unemployment being brain drain, where qualified locals migrate to have better paying employment opportunities. One way to combat unemployment is to encourage foreign companies to create branches of businesses on Caribbean islands. This can be one way to keep unemployment numbers low in this region. Addressing unemployment is crucial for stability in the Caribbean.
