This is the beginning of a series on the types of essays one can encounter and need to master at a secondary level. The first installment of the series? What is an argumentative essay?
An argumentative essay is a piece of writing meant to persuade a reader to take up the writer’s position. It uses statistics, evidence and critical thinking to arrive at a conclusion. Argumentative essays follow a format. There is the introductory paragraph. There are the body paragraphs. There is the conclusion. The introduction ends with a thesis statement that indicates the slant that will be argued in the essay. The body paragraphs feature topic sentences that support the thesis statement. The conclusion reinforces the main argument.
