The note below is something that came to mind recently – to write something on how to write an excellent essay in a short period of time, what students are asked to do in their CXC/CSEC exams. To write a great essay requires planning and time management. The first step in this process is to read the question and decipher exactly what is being asked of you. Are you to discuss, argue? Both of those words ask something different of you. Discuss asks that you present both sides of an argument and come to a conclusion on your own. An argumentative essay asks you to pick one side and defend it. You as a student are tasked with interpreting the instruction given and produce the appropriate piece of writing.
Plan your response. Write down your thesis statement and topic sentences. A plan will guide your essay. Allocate enough time to flesh out your introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion. Ensure that each paragraph is supported with appropriate evidence. You can include data, quotes and many other tools to strengthen your argument. Leave enough time, maybe five minutes or so to re-read your essay and fix any errors – spelling or clarity issues. Keep track of time so that all parts of the essay can be well done. Effective planning and time management as well as regular essay writing practice can increase your speed and help you perform well under pressure.
