What Words Can I Include in my Argumentative Essays to make them Compelling?

This question ran through my head recently, and I have come up with a solution. I have a list of 30 words that a student can include in their essays to give them more punch, more substance, make them more compelling. This list can be used in a student’s CXC prep/ CSEC prep. Please do utilize the list below.

Alleviate – to reduce or ease a burden or problem

Ambiguous – having more than one possible meaning; unclear

Advocate – to support or argue in favor of something

Assertive – confidently self-assured without being aggressive

Bias – a tendency to favor one side unfairly

Coherent – logical and consistent

Credible – believable and trustworthy

Counterargument – an opposing viewpoint to one’s claim

Detrimental – harmful or damaging

Empirical – based on observation or experience rather than theory

Equitable – fair and just

Feasible – possible and practical

Fundamental – forming a necessary base or core

Hypocrisy – claiming to have moral standards without actually practicing them

Ideology – a set of beliefs or principles, especially in politics or society

Impartial – neutral, without bias

Inherent – existing as a natural or essential part of something

Inevitable – certain to happen; unavoidable

Justifiable – able to be shown as right or reasonable

Marginalized – pushed to the edge or made less important

Mitigate – to make less severe or serious

Notion – an idea or belief

Plausible – seeming reasonable or likely

Prevalent – widespread or commonly occurring

Rationale – a reason or explanation for something

Reinforce – to strengthen or support

Scrutinize – to examine carefully

Substantiate – to prove or support with evidence

Viable – capable of working successfully

Warrant – to justify or give reason for something
