📌 Metonymy

Definition:
Metonymy is a literary device where a word or phrase is replaced by something closely associated with it, rather than using the thing itself.

Example:

“The pen is mightier than the sword.”

  • “Pen” stands for writing or communication
  • “Sword” stands for war or violence

So the sentence means: Communication is more powerful than violence.

🎯 More Quick Examples:

  • “The crown will decide.”
“Crown” = the king or queen
  • “Hollywood is obsessed with sequels.”
    “Hollywood” = the film industry
  • “The White House issued a statement.”
“The White House” = the U.S. president or administration

And there you go! Now go ahead and use metonymy in your CXC prep/ CSEC prep.
