📌 Metonymy
Definition:
Metonymy is a literary device where a word or phrase is replaced by something closely associated with it, rather than using the thing itself.
✅ Example:
“The pen is mightier than the sword.”
- “Pen” stands for writing or communication
- “Sword” stands for war or violence
So the sentence means: Communication is more powerful than violence.
🎯 More Quick Examples:
- “The crown will decide.”
→ “Crown” = the king or queen - “Hollywood is obsessed with sequels.”
→ “Hollywood” = the film industry - “The White House issued a statement.”
→ “The White House” = the U.S. president or administration
And there you go! Now go ahead and use metonymy in your CXC prep/ CSEC prep.
