Definition:
An idiom is a phrase or expression whose meaning cannot be understood from the literal definitions of its individual words. Instead, it carries a figurative meaning understood through common use.


Idiom: “Spill the beans”

  • Literal meaning: To accidentally pour beans out of a container.
  • Idiomatic meaning: To reveal a secret or disclose confidential information.

Example sentence:
“She wasn’t supposed to tell anyone about the surprise party, but she spilled the beans.”
