📌 Caesura

Definition:
A caesura is a deliberate pause or break in a line of poetry, often marked by punctuation such as a comma, period, dash, or ellipsis. It creates a rhythmic shift, dramatic pause, or emphasis in the verse.

Example:

To be, or not to be — that is the question.
William Shakespeare, Hamlet

Here:

  • The dash marks a caesura, causing the reader to pause and think before continuing.

✨ Key Points:

  • Caesuras can be medial (in the middle of a line), initial (near the start), or terminal (near the end).
  • They add emotional weight, dramatic effect, or natural speech rhythm.

And there it is! Now go ahead and use caesuras in your CXC prep/ CSEC prep.
