📌 Hamartia

Definition:
Hamartia is a tragic flaw or error in judgment in a character that leads to their downfall in a story, particularly in tragedies. It is often a personality trait like pride, impulsiveness, or naivety.


Example:

Hamlet’s indecision in Shakespeare’s Hamlet*

  • Hamlet’s inability to act decisively against King Claudius ultimately contributes to the tragic ending of the play.

Another example:

Oedipus’s pride and determination to defy fate in Oedipus Rex lead him to unknowingly fulfill the prophecy and bring disaster upon himself.
