📌 Parataxis

Definition:
Parataxis is a literary and rhetorical device in which short, simple clauses or phrases are placed side by side without using conjunctions (or with minimal use of them). It creates a direct, concise, and sometimes dramatic effect, leaving the relationship between the ideas implied rather than explained.

Example:

  • Julius Caesar’s famous line: “I came, I saw, I conquered.”
  • Hemingway-style writing: “The sun rose. The sky was clear. The birds sang.”

👉 The effect of parataxis is to make writing feel urgent, punchy, or stark, often forcing the reader to connect the dots themselves.
