📌 Cataphora

Definition:
Cataphora is a literary device in which a word or phrase refers forward to another word or phrase that appears later in the text. It’s the opposite of anaphora, which refers back to something already mentioned.

Example:

  • “When he finally arrived, John was exhausted.”
    • The pronoun “he” appears before the noun “John”, which it refers to.

Another example:

  • “Before she could speak, Maria ran out the door.”
    • “She” anticipates “Maria”, creating suspense or emphasis.

And there you have it! Now go ahead and use cataphora in your CXC prep/ CSEC prep.
