Religion is ubiquitous. All the world over persons of various creeds and races worship a high power or higher powers. This practice has not been without controversy. Various special interest groups have put forth the idea that religion should not be as widely taught as it currently is, and especially should not be taught in schools, because of the detrimental effects of learning these sets of beliefs. This essay seeks to argue against this point, and that religion should not be taught in schools.
Religion should not be taught in school because it promotes beliefs that are anti-woman. From the beginning of the Christian Bible, the creation story removes the woman from the birth process. In the book of Genesis, God created man, the male subspecies of human. Man was lonely, so God, a man put the second man to sleep, and used a bone from his ribcage to create woman. This is contrary to how humans actually reproduce. Women do the majority of the growing, and only women birth the children. Yes, men are important in the creation of children, but they don’t do as much of the labor as women do. This invention of how reproduction works is harmful to children, because it can lead young girls to believe that they are inconsequential in reproduction. This may lead young girls to play fast and loose with their bodies, and can result in teenage pregnancies, broken homes and opportunities for greatness squandered from an early age. Religion, and in this particular instance, the Christian Bible and its teachings are harmful to young people, particularly girls and their sense of self.
In conclusion, religion should not be taught in school. Learning religion can be harmful to young people, and persons in authority should think long and hard before implementing religious education in schools.
