Respect is earned. Respect is not always given. One may believe that upon reaching the age of 18 years old that all persons now deemed “adults” should be respected. This is not the truth. This essay seeks to argue against this point, that not all adults should be respected.
Not all adults should be respected because some adults are dangers to others and to themselves. Not all adults are in the right frame of mind to be leaders among their peers and young ones. Some adults battle mental illnesses of various forms. Some battle alcoholism and can’t be looked upon to lead others. Respect in this case means ceding decision making power to the alcoholic adult. Imagine an example where children need to be protected from danger. A drunk adult cannot be respected, i.e. they cannot be given the authority to decide how the younger ones are to remain safe. In this instance, the adult may be a danger to themselves as well as the persons under their care. Therefore, in this instance of an alcoholic adult looking over younger persons, they cannot be respected.
In conclusion, not all adults are to be respected. Drunk adults cannot be trusted to make smart decisions over themselves or others. They cannot be given the respect of a responsible adult in this case.
