Elderly people were once young people. Young people in their wisdom and strength make plans for their future, including care in their later years. There is a prevailing thought that older persons should be cared for by their loved ones. This essay will argue against this point, that young people should not be mandated to care for their elders.
Young people should not have to care for the elderly because they have their own lives to live. All persons should have the freedom to live unencumbered lives. This includes leaving and cleaving, which Christians describe as young people leaving their family homes and creating a new home with their spouse. This is one of the critical steps a young person takes as they cross over into adulthood. When one has to care for their elderly loved ones, this is unfortunately seen as a burden to prospective spousal candidates. Persons want to start their families from scratch, with husband and wife only, not with others in tow. Therefore, with older persons under their care, young people are less likely to get married and live happy adult lives. Caring for elders means stunted growth.
In conclusion, young people should not be forced to care for elderly people. This can lead to them failing to launch into their adult lives and being unhappy throughout their years.
