All drugs are not created equally. Some drugs are more dangerous to use than others. Alcohol and cigarette users are often sanctimonious in their condemning of marijuana and illegal drug users. They have every right to do so. This essay shall argue against the idea that cigarette and alcohol users are hypocrites in looking down on illegal drug users.
Alcohol and cigarette users can feel righteous in condemning illegal drug users because the latter group of drugs is more dangerous than the former. Alcohol use has been studied and documented for centuries. Cigarette use is similar to alcohol use in that it also has been written about in official scientific contexts. Marijuana and other illicit drugs like ecstasy have not been so lucky. Governments can regulate alcohol and cigarette use because the effects of these drugs while negative are well known. Ecstasy has not been well researched, so no government in their right mind can recommend its use, or any other illegal drug. While one can be harmed by alcohol and cigarettes, as well as illegal drugs, we as humans are aware of the consequences of alcohol and cigarettes and take informed decisions to partake in these substances. One rolls the dice when consuming other drugs and plays with their health while taking illegal drugs. The unknown risk of consumption of illegal drugs is why alcohol drug users can criticize other drug users.
To conclude, alcohol and cigarette users can condemn marijuana and other drug users for their choice of drug. The latter group of drugs is not studied, and the consequence of their use is unknown. Risking one’s life to take a drug is courting danger, is not a consequence of consuming alcohol and cigarettes, and is why these users can look down on illegal drug users.
