“More money more problems.” This is an excerpt from a song of the same name by the Notorious B.I.G. which highlights the struggle to stay worry free with an abundance of money. Many people believe that having more money is the key to solve all of their problems. This essay shall underscore the fact that money and by extension material possessions are not necessary for happiness.
Material possessions aren’t necessary for happiness because past a certain point, there is no discernable difference in happiness levels. In a study conducted by a well-known research lab, it was found that past a household income level of 75,000 annually, there was no increase in the overall contentment of earners. That is to say that more money, and material possessions does not equal to more happiness. There are persons with average earnings that are happy just as much as the persons with more money. There is a ceiling to happiness, and happiness does not increase exponentially as money increases.
To summarize, material possessions are not necessary for happiness. Lots of physical goods does not equate to a happy or happier life in the grand scheme of things.
