Respect your elders. This is a commandment that is not only found in Christian ideology but in many a religion the world over. This belief states that children should obey their elders, to heed their directives. Many persons believe that respect for parents should be unquestionable, even during adulthood and especially if one is still living under their parents’ roof. This essay shall argue in favor of this point, that children should obey their parents once they live under their roof, regardless of their age.

Children who still live at home should obey their parents because their parents are in control of the household. Imagine a scenario where a parent tells their adult child to turn off the taps when they have finished using the water. In this case, the parent does not give a reason as to why the child should do this action. The child should just follow the command given to them. Now imagine that the child disobeys the order, and all of the water reserves wash down the drain. Now not only the child and the parent but all persons living in the household would have to do without water, because one child did not obey their parent. Obeying one’s parent in the case of living under their roof as an adult is imperative because the parent knows how best to run their household. The parent knows that water is a scarce resource, that they should not waste it, and to shut off all pipes after use. Although both parties in this scenario, parent and child are adults, the child should obey the parent because the parent knows the best actions to take to best care for their household.

In conclusion, children once living under their parents’ roof should obey them. Parents know how to best direct their household, and can give adequate directions to ensure that all runs well under the shared roof.
