Migration is an important topic, particular for Caribbean societies. No Caribbean country has been untouched by this phenomenon, which robs the territory of some of its brightest minds. This essay shall discuss the impact of migration on Caribbean societies.

Migration does positively affect countries in the Caribbean. As stated above, migration is the process whereby persons move from one place to another. In this context, migration refers to the moving of persons to and from the Caribbean region. Immigration, or the process of persons relocating to the Caribbean is a great boon to the region. Persons bring with them their skills, ready to trade and make a living in the region. You see many craftsmen, doctors, lawyers, engineers among others who choose to make the Caribbean their home. These immigrants set up businesses that when they become successful are taxed by the government. These extra earnings are put to good use, feeding school children, clearing the roads of debris and paying law enforcement officers to keep the peace. Here we see migration being a net positive for the Caribbean.

Migration does also negatively impact Caribbean countries. As we have persons coming into the territory with their pro-social skills, we have persons who come with the opposite. Some examples of anti-social skills are stealing, beating and looting. As persons migrate to the Caribbean, official statistics do show a higher incidence of petty crimes being committed against citizens by newly immigrated residents. Several Caribbean countries have reported higher than usual numbers of crimes committed by persons of Latin descent following the societal breakdowns in Venezuela and Cuba. That is to say that persons do bring with them their negative behaviors when they migrate to the Caribbean. Here we also see a negative effect of immigration in the Caribbean.

To summarize, migration does affect the Caribbean in both positive and negative ways. Migration does bring more income from taxes collected from new immigrant businesses. Migration also brings spates of crime from newly immigrated persons. Caribbean governments should examine the pros and cons of migration as this does affect the region.
