Teenage pregnancy simply put is when a person aged 19 and under conceives a child. Teen pregnancies are not relegated to persons in the Caribbean, as they occur worldwide. Teen pregnancies affect the individual, the family and society, and this essay shall discuss the effects of teenage pregnancy on these stakeholders in the Caribbean.

Teenage pregnancy negatively financially impacts the individuals affected. Teens that get pregnant have their academic prospects cut short. When teens are normally deciding on what to do for their future, they often are concerned with earning an income to support their soon to be expanded family. Persons with limited education, like teenagers in the Caribbean, are limited to minimum wage jobs, which hinders them from paying for adequate housing, transportation or more than their basic needs.

Teenage pregnancy also affects families. In the Caribbean, persons are oftentimes highly religious. This means that pregnancy out of wedlock among teens is frowned upon. There are numerous stories of pregnant teens being summarily ejected from their homes. Families are broken as mother stops speaking to expectant mother, and father no longer speaks to expectant father. These soon to be parents need support, and these fractured relationships mean that these young parents to be don’t fare well in their futures.

Society is also affected by teenage pregnancy. Fractured families are sometimes a strain on the public pocket. When teens create unstable families, families where the parents are not legally bound to one another, the public fills the financial gap. Young fathers often evade their court appointed child support payments and the worried mothers and hungry children approach the relevant social service authorities. Governments are forced to create programs to financially support these teen parents. This money could be used in other ways, like building roads, reducing the cost of gasoline for citizens with vehicles or paying teachers a livable wage. Teen pregnancy does affect the society at large.

Teen pregnancy can be reduced with the right intervention. Governments can launch sensitization drives on the importance of contraception, so that unintended pregnancy numbers can be driven down. The various religious institutions can preach more often about abstinence, and the importance of conceiving only with one’s legal spouse. With these strategies in place, teenage pregnancy can have less of a negative impact on various stakeholders in Caribbean society.
