With one parent missing from the financial equation, children go without enough food to eat, school supplies to use and even adequate healthcare. Poor families eventually end up on welfare and depend heavily on social services to bridge the gap between their salary and the ideal number of resources each child should have. The economy would suffer with single parent households as the state would have to allocate large sums to help raise children from single parent households to the detriment of allocating funds to other money-making programs.

Single parent families affect the societal development of Caribbean countries. With half of the manpower not available to bring up children in a positive way, children may become wayward. Children may be left to their own devices when the remaining parent has to work for two. Children may commit crimes to feed themselves. They may join gangs to feel a sense of family. They may turn to drugs out of boredom. This in turn puts a strain on law enforcement and increase crime rates as these children commit crimes. National development would be affected as the youth are the future of a country. When a large portion of the young persons are incarcerated or under the influence, that does not auger well for the future prosperity of a country.

Single parent households affect the economic development of the Caribbean. According to regionwide statistics, 50% of children from single parent households drop out of school before the age of 16 to work and help provide for their families. When children prematurely leave school, they have lower literacy rates than the average person of a similar age. The labor force weakens as a result of students removing themselves from school, which has negative effects on national productivity and economic growth. A country would struggle to maintain its GDP when the upcoming generations are not educated enough to earn revenue with their skills.

One way to combat the negative effects of single parent households in the Caribbean is to sensitize the public on the benefits of having two parent households. The relevant government authorities can make the effects of single parent households known, and have persons be aware of the social and economic consequences that their Caribbean country may face if they lead single parent households. In this way, less households can be led by one parent, and the countries in the region can be less affected by the negative effects of single parent households.

To conclude, single parent households affect the Caribbean region. There are social and economic consequences to having one parent lead a home as opposed to two. One way to lessen the negative effect of single parent households on the region is to have government led sensitization campaigns on the benefits of having two parents lead a household, so that the Caribbean at large can be less disadvantaged by having many single parent households.
