The Caribbean is seen as a veritable paradise. Persons pay to vacation where others live. This perception of the Caribbean isn’t the complete truth. Crime is a major problem that affects the Caribbean. This essay shall discuss how crime affects the region today.

Crime is a social ill that negatively affects the Caribbean region. Crime can be loosely described as any action committed against another that is intended to do harm. Crime can be interpersonal, between small or large groups. A lack of opportunity is one cause of crime. All persons need to cover their basic needs of food, clothing and shelter. When there aren’t any ways to earn and income to provide for these needs, persons turn to illegal activities that are a source of fast money. They can begin selling illegal drugs that while temporarily enrichen the dealers’ pockets, lower productivity for the overall population. This eventually leads to less economic prosperity for the country on a large scale, and less money to pay for essential services like members of the defense force.

One way to combat the negative effects of crime is to offer opportunities for persons to legally make an income. Governments can offer free training sessions on how to cook local favorites so persons can create enterprises selling to others. Governments can create short term contracts for young persons to get on the job training and earn a stipend while they work. This could go a long way to helping persons providing for their needs and deterring persons from committing crimes to be able to survive.

Crime is a serious problem in the Caribbean. It is caused by persons not having immediate opportunities to make an income to support themselves. One way to combat the negative effects of crime is to create opportunities for persons to make an income. Solutions to crime are necessary to ensure that the Caribbean remains habitable, and not bogged down by crime.
