Social Studies Essay – Examine How Peer Pressure Can Influence Behavior Among Youth in the Caribbean

Peer pressure is described as the influence that young people have on their similarly aged peers. In the Caribbean as well as many other countries worldwide, their youth experience both positive and negative peer pressure. This essay shall examine how peer pressure can influence behavior among youth in the Caribbean.

Peer pressure can positively affect young persons in the Caribbean. You are the company that you keep. This is a popular train of thought among many a person, as it is believed that persons are the sum of the five closest people around them. Children are also influenced by the persons around them, and sometimes for the better. If a child finds themselves in a group that would like to be successful in their CSEC Social Studies exams, and that group has regular study sessions that reinforce lessons learned in school, then that student can be influenced to study often and pass their Social Studies exams. This positive effect of peer pressure can see the child creating a lucrative business in the future and helping increase their country’s economic prosperity.

Peer pressure can negatively affect young persons in the Caribbean region. If a student finds themselves in a group that partakes in drug use, then they can be negatively affected. It is proven that persons that consume drugs during their childhood years face stunted development. Their brains are affected, for the worse. This does not auger well for students as they need their brains to develop regularly, to be well equipped to participate in society. A student that is influenced by their peers to do drugs could struggle to become socially prosperous in their community. They could struggle to make friends, date or not know how to socialize with their coworkers in the future. This may lead to them not being able to obtain work and depending on social services to support their lifestyles. Here we see peer pressure negatively affecting young people in their lives.

One way to counteract the negative effects of peer pressure is to reinforce persons thinking for themselves. The school, the religious institutions, the media and various stakeholders can have campaigns that sensitize young persons on the benefits of being self-assured and making one’s own decisions. They can highlight the future benefits of choosing good peer influences and the resulting successful adult life they could have. In this way, Caribbean countries can see a decline in young persons being negatively affected by peer pressure.

Peer pressure does affect youth in the Caribbean. They are positively affected by peers who are studious as they adopt the group habits and reap the rewards of this choice. Young people are negatively affected by peer pressure when they follow persons who indulge in taking drugs. They become developmentally delayed and struggle to adapt to societal norms. Caribbean countries should focus on peer pressure and use it as a tool for positive growth among the youth.
